It’s / Its

Just spotted an improper use of “it’s” on a Tweet I sent yesterday from my iPod, when it should have been “its” as it was a possessive pronoun. What is the point of iPod’s autoincorrect feature? It’s trying to be too clever for its own good.

Jack of Lantern

Occupy London

Overheard passenger

Overheard passenger: “How long’s the journey?” “A couple of hours” “Huff, more specific, 1 or 2?!” “2″ Might he have a couple of brain cells?

David Mitchell

I was reading some David Mitchell columns from the Guardian archive at the weekend. These ones I particularly liked: We’ve always found Hitler hilarious – the alternative is much more odious The moustache comment really tickled me. JK Rowling should remember that less means more in the Potterverse This paragraph struck a chord with me (though [...]

Ricky Gervais’s Reclaiming of the word, “mong”

Ricky Gervais has recently become a frequent ‘tweeter’ on Twitter. It may be assumed he has done so for reasons of self-publicizing. You may assume this because he frequently publicizes his products. As well he might; he’s part of the top band of famous people who can attract attention without needing to whore themselves around [...]

That or which?

This is something that I’ve always been aware I needed to look up, which I now have. Did I get both uses right then? Taken from the Guardian style guide, which is linked to from this article where there is further explanation. This is quite easy, really: “that” defines, “which” gives extra information (often in [...]

Millionaires and corporations are using tax breaks to help sway public opinion

Millionaires and corporations are using tax breaks to help sway public opinion “Thinktanks and lobby groups are the bane of democratic politics. They are the means by which corporations and the ultra-rich influence public life without having to reveal their hand. Their refusal to reveal who funds them, and the British state’s failure to demand [...]

Is this reality?

I don’t know what’s real any more. Alan Partridge (fictional?) is talking to Phillip Schofield (real?), who is making claims such as: “I swear to God he was suddenly made of lead!!”

Sick Jokes

I watched ‘Ricky Gervais: Science’ shown on Channel 4 on Friday, and I’m not quite sure how this comment sits with me. See the clip (taken from an American recording of the show, 11 minutes in) or just the quote I picked out: “When we tell a sick joke it’s with the expressed understanding that neither [...]

Charlie Brooker: Why does the BBC dump so much money in a big glittery bin by making glossy trailers?

“The one thing I can’t find is any mention of how much the BBC spends on promotional trails. I’m not talking about the on-air trails consisting of edited highlights. I’m talking about the bespoke mini-movies encouraging me to watch such little-known broadcasts as Strictly Come Dancing; ads created not from footage from the shows themselves, [...]
