Should BBC2 daytime be axed?

There’s talk of ditching BBC2′s daytime output and playing the BBC News Channel instead. I think it’s worth looking at – BBC2 offers little more than BBC1 during the daytime – but nobody needs another broadcast of BBC News when the whole country should be able to get the BBC News Channel soon anyway. (You might argue that one showing of rolling news is MORE than enough anyway).

What could be on BBC2 instead? Old films and archive BBC telly? Probably not much cheaper than the current ‘lifestyle’ programmes they show so that would just be a change in the style of programming rather than for any cost-cutting benefit.

I saw an interesting comment on that article about broadcasting pictures from the radio studios. I think there’s something in that. You could have Radio 2 shown on BBC2. Even extend it and have Radio 1 on BBC3 and 5 Live, Radio 4 or 6 Music on BBC4. Daytime telly is mainly for ‘background’ purposes anyway so radio would fit in well, and some people might like to be able to see it, especially when they have guests being interviewed or live music sessions. Would be cheap to do, just stick a camera in the corner of the studio (they already have webcams). If ever there’s some real telly to broadcast during the day – live sport, events etc. – the radio feed could be bumped to the red button for those that miss it.

It’s got to be better than repeats of Diagnosis Murder for all those now at home out of work!
